When UPS delivered the box, I wasn’t sure what it was. I knew there was a computer coming, but didn’t expect to find it inside. Wow, the NUC, Intel’s Next Unit Of Computing, is so stunningly small, it fits in the palm of my hand. I’ll be installing the DC3217IYE into a client site needing a small form factor computer to run their store point of sale (POS) system. I’ll be testing it over the next few days and report back with results and impressions.

Does it appear like there are only two major gadgets to give this holiday season: either a smartphone or a tablet? We’re bombarded everyday with a new contender, be it the Samsung Galaxy II smartphone or Kindle Fire tablet. But, of course, there are thousands of other tech gadgets that will make that geeky friend on your list happy for a fraction of the cost. Without diving into every tech website out there, here are just a few to get your mind going in a different direction, be it for a more eco-conscious or just a more economical tech-geek gift.

Gadgets make great gifts – whether they’re practical or not

Who doesn’t like getting gadgets? While you may not love the 40-in-1 Swiss Army knife, the 6-in-1 key chain may fit the bill. In either case, a true gadget lover will find a use for them. So, the Starship Enterprise Pizza Cutter or a set of crocheted headphones might just delight that tech geek friend of yours.

Gadgets for the hard-to-shop-for individual

So what makes a good gadget gift? It really depends on how tech-savvy the recipient is, and just how much you’d like to spend. If you have a bit more money and the individual is environmentally conscious, you might opt for a “green” choice. Eco-friendly products abound and are especially sought after this year. From hand-powered paper shredders to solar-powered tiki torches, many options exist for that inner tree-hugger in all of us.

Tablet or smartphone owners

For those friends and relatives who already own smartphones or tablets, there are gadget accessories that are sure to brighten their day. In general, the intent for tablets and smartphone is to be solely touch-screen based. However, many people prefer a physical keyboard when typing for long periods of time on their tablet or smartphone. That’s why these gadgets will definitely be welcomed with open arms! Both of these cases, one for the iPad, and one for the iPhone, were created with a physical keyboard included.

The best part about gadgets and the reason they’re continuously sought after is that they’re always at hand. Gadgets, simply put, make our lives easier. While phones and tablets are the big-ticket rage this holiday season, hopefully we’ve given you some ideas for tech gadget gifts that are under the radar!

Do you find yourself agonizing over every little detail? Does it take you 3 times as long to carry out a task because you are trying to get it “just right?” If so, you might be a perfectionist? It’s not an uncommon personality trait to see in the business world and it can help to push individuals to endeavor to do their best. In extreme cases, though, it leads to wasted time and resources. The outcome usually doesn’t justify the immense effort that went into it. If you find yourself in the web of extreme perfectionism, here are a few tips that can lead you out.

Make a Decision and Stick to it
When you choose on a direction to take and announce it to your employees, stick to it. One of the pitfalls of perfectionism is wasted time second-guessing yourself. If you’re constantly changing gears after your team has begun the project, then you have wasted those recourses. You might never know if your third, fourth, or fifth decision would be any better. As they say, go with your gut!

Trus t your Employees
When you tell your employees your plan and what resources you will need from them, listen to their input. They will let you know if it’s possible and if they think it’s a good idea. Listening to their insight will help keep you from sliding into another guessing game. Another piece to this is, trusting your staff to do their part well. You hired them because they’re skilled, right? Lastly, before you start implementing your plan, just in case…

Have a Plan B
You never know what’s going to happen! An obstacle may arise that cannot be overcome, so make sure you have a plan B. A backup plan can help you from getting entrenched to deeply in your first plan and devastated if things go wrong. The more flexible and ready for change you are, the easier it is to adapt to things life throws at you.

There is a fine line between perfectionism and having a critical eye. It’s essential to always strive for the best, but worrying about getting something perfect is detrimental to the project and your mental health. The steps I’ve outlined above will help you to free yourself from the perfectionist mindset, if you find yourself there. Here is a great article about avoiding the pitfalls of perfectionism all together.

Do you remember hearing the first disappointed comments right after the iPhone 4S announcement? To put it simply, everyone was a bit dissatisfied that the new iPhone was not going to be a full-blown revamp of the iPhone 4. Some were concerned that it would just be an iPhone 4 with a few simple upgrades, suckering gadget-junkies to stand in line for hours only to find that the 4S was fundamentally the same as its predecessor, with only a few more bells and whistles. Well, the truth is, the new iPhone is a bit of both. It is not a revolutionary product like the original iPhone – or even the iPhone 4. Rather, it’s more evolutionary with several impressive upgrades. Here’s a quick look at 3 of the upgrades Apple has produced in the 4S – and whether or not they’re worth waiting in line for.

Software

Maybe the most noticeable of the iPhone 4S upgrades is found in its speed and power. The 4S features a dual-core A5 chip found in the iPad 2, which makes opening apps, loading the browser, scrolling through home screens and countless other operations much faster and smoother. Apple states that the iPhone 4S is twice as fast as the iPhone 4, and exhibits seven times its graphical prowess.

Siri

Perhaps the most interesting addition in the 4S is the introduction of Siri, a voice controlled personal assistant that can help you schedule lunch dates, find restaurants or see what the weather is like in Denver just by talking to it in a conversational voice. “Tell Jodi that I’m running late and need to reschedule my meeting” is a good example of how Siri can parse your information, find a specific person and complete the task for you. A down-side, however, is that it is still a work in progress, and many times Siri can’t handle the data in the question, and just gives you a comical reply. Which is amusing at first, but loses the humor after a couple of weeks. Here’s another take on the topic: http://www.forbes.com/sites/benzingainsights/2011/10/17/is-siri-seriously-awesome-or-seriously-flawed/

iCloud

iCloud is Apple’s replacement of MobileMe. It is available on all new iPhone, iPad and Mac purchases, and automatically and safely stores everything on your device’s hard drive. Access to music, apps, photos is much simpler from any other device. One downfall, though, is that some MobileMe users have found that after MobileMe created its own user ID, it has been difficult for them to “sync up.” Equally frustrating is the fact that iCloud doesn’t recognize other mail accounts that don’t contain a me.com email address. Again, like Siri, one would hope these issues were hashed out before the launch.

So, should you upgrade to the iPhone 4S? It depends on the type of user you are. If you’ve shown up at midnight for previous Apple launches, you won’t be disappointed with the 4S. It is faster, more robust, has impressive upgrades like Siri and iCloud, and we didn’t even mention the improved camera and editing features. But if you’re satisfied with the phone you’re using now, and it does all you want it to do, you could easily wait until Apple’s next revolution – which, knowing them, is right around the corner.

Apple is known for its forward thinking, cutting-edge and revolutionary inventions. From the Apple IIe to the iPad, Apple has always been at the forefront of computing and communicating. However, it has set the bar so high that even Apple finds itself hard to beat. A good example is the recent release of the iPhone 4S – a truly impressive product using the latest and greatest technology available. But to its loyal fans, people who are always expecting a revolution instead of an evolution, some might have found the launch of an upgraded/evolved iPhone 4 rather than a revamped and brand new iPhone 5, to be less than remarkable. However, the 4S does present 3 very impressive upgrades, which should inspire die-hard Apple users to seriously consider getting the iPhone 4S.

Software

One of the most noticeable areas of improvement can be found in the amount of speed and power that the 4S commands. Apple announced that the iPhone 4S has seven times the graphical prowess of its predecessor and is twice as powerful. It features the iPad 2’s dual-core A5 chip making opening apps, loading the web browser, scrolling through home screens and countless other operations smoother and faster.

Siri

One remarkable difference between the iPhone 4 and the 4S is the addition of your very own “personal assistant” named Siri. When it works, it is an amazing feat of technology. You can simply tell Siri to contact a colleague and tell her you’re running late. Tell Siri, “I’m feeling like Indian food,” and she will tell you where the nearest place serving Sag Paneer is located. Even so, the caveat is “when it works.” When Siri cannot understand a particular command, area or specific person, she will tell you humorously, if not annoyingly after a while, that she can’t process the info. Certainly this will be fixed in the future, but it would be wonderful if it worked flawlessly now. See this article for another take on Siri.

iCloud

Similar to MobileMe, iCloud allows you to access all of your most important data, pictures, apps, music and photos from any device, whether you access it from the device the content was created on, or if you want to use your iPad to show your friends a picture you took using your iPhone. One downfall, however, is that for users used to MobileMe’s specific syncing procedures, the user id it created doesn’t “play well” with iCloud. At the same time, iCloud doesn’t recognize email accounts like Yahoo or Gmail as they don’t contain a me.com email address. Although it’s fantastic technology, the reality that it still has what seem to be fairly obvious faults makes it that much more frustrating to Apple enthusiasts.

Ultimately, the iPhone 4S was predestined to be a huge seller worldwide – but are its upgrades worth the wait? The solution mostly depends on the type of user you are. If you have to have the most cutting-edge product available, with improved hardware, camera, voice controls and iCloud, it may be something to consider. If the iPhone or other mobile phone you’re using gets you where you want to go, its good to know that the iPhone 4S is more of an evolution than revolution – but its pretty cool none-the-less.

When you think of the ways the cloud has changed businesses, creativity is not what usually comes to mind first. You will be amazed at how advantageous the cloud has been for those in creative industries. The cloud makes it possible for a massive amount of information to be stored and available to people quickly from virtually any location. And due to the popularity of tablets, people can access that information and share it at the simple touch of a button. Here are a few ways that the cloud and tablets as a team have improved the way that creative people do business.

Portfolios
Portfolios used to be restricted to what you could physically carry with you and difficult decisions had to be made about what to leave in and what to cut when building a portfolio. Now portfolios can be stored in the cloud, organized into categories appropriate to different clients, and accessed quickly on tablets. As you can imagine, this allows for quick interactions that can lead to more opportunities.

Creative Collaboration
In the past, collaborating with individuals in different time zones was very difficult. It required sending huge files through email, working on them independently then sending them back. This created multiple versions and duplicate copies, which was confusing. The cloud permits people to work on the same file simultaneously. This speeds up the collaborative process and keep everyone on the same page, so to speak.

Brainstorming
Similarly, the cloud has improved the way groups brainstorm together. By creating mind maps in the cloud, everyone can work on an idea together. By accessing the mind map on a tablet or other mobile device, you can get opinions from colleagues and update the shared file with ease. Breaking down the distance barrier allows skilled people who previously could not contribute to do so.

When the mobile capabilities of tablets are paired with the cloud, creativity can happen with anybody, anywhere at anytime.

Many industries have changed due to the cloud. Massive amounts of information can be stored and shared easily in the cloud. And with the popularity of tablets people can access it quickly. This has improved the way creative people do business, below are a few examples if this.

Portfolios
You once had to carry heavy portfolios when meeting with clients. Those portfolios were limited to the amount of work you could carry within. Portfolios, when stored in the cloud, are not limited to physical size. You can organize your past work into categories that fit the needs of different clients. By accessing your portfolio quickly on a tablet, you can share your work more easily and this can lead to more opportunities.

Creative Collaboration
In the past, collaborating with individuals in different time zones was very difficult. It required sending huge files through email, working on them independently then sending them back. This created multiple versions and duplicate copies, which was confusing. The cloud allows people to work on the same file simultaneously. This speeds up the collaborative process and keep everyone on the same page, so to speak.

Brainstorming
Brainstorming and mind mapping are other things the cloud has improved as numerous people can input their ideas into one file. People can access these mind maps on tablets, get input from local collogues, and update the shared file that everyone can see. This kind of connectedness breaks down the distance barrier, which used to be such a limitation in business.

When the mobile capabilities of tablets are paired with the cloud, creativity can happen anywhere at anytime and with anybody.

Everyone loves computers. Why is that? The obvious answer is: they are highly valuable items. They automate some of the more difficult aspects of our lives and grant us entertainment. However, it’s this value which makes our machines hot targets for thievery. Here are a few simple measures you can take to help ensure that your computer is safeguarded from such attempts.

Physical Security

The beauty of most personal computers is that they’re portable. Even desktops can be moved easily with a few cord disconnections and a quick pull. To make sure both your laptop and desktop computers are secure inside your home or workplace, consider buying a strong, keyed cable lock. Essentially, they help chain your pc down in a manner that makes them very difficult to steal. These items can run for an average of $40, but they provide a priceless sense of security.

Data Security

Computer’s are worth more than the sum of their physical parts. When a computer is stolen, the thief may have access to your personal information and data. Even if your computer is password protected or your data is encrypted, the data stored within could, in theory, be accessed. Because of this, it’s a good practice to store your bank account, credit and social security information in a different location. Having your identity stolen on top of losing your computer would only add insult to injury.

Keeping Track

Wish there was a way to track down your pc when it goes missing? Yeah, there’s an app for that. Downloading tracking software onto your computer will allow you to locate it once it’s gone, so long as the hard drive remains intact. While a computer may its hard drive wiped clean once stolen, there has been numerous occasions where computer tracking apps have been successful in returning the stolen item to its owner.

While all of these tips are useful in keeping your computer safe, there is no replacement for common sense and reasonable vigilance. Make sure to take good care of your computer; chances are it takes good care of you.

Computers are prized possessions, regardless of what they are being used for. They supply a practical value with regard to the processes they allow us to automate, but there is also a monetary value that should be considered. The high price tag carried by computers makes them tempting targets for any thief. Here are a few quick tips to consider when beefing up your computer’s security.

Physical Security

Don’t mistake the cables plugged into your desktop as any kind of safeguard. Even if they are complicated and difficult to access, a thief is more than happy to leave with the bare bones of your machine. To avoid being left with only a tangle of wires, use a strong security cable, preferably one that includes a key. These cables generally cost around $40 and are easy to install and use. They anchor your computer in a way that makes it very difficult to steal.

Data Security

A computer is a valuable target for a thief, not only because of the material value of the machine but also because of the data stored within. Encrypting data is always a great protective measure to help keep your data is safe, but there is certain data you should never store permanently. Such information includes your credit card information, social security number and checking account. Having your identity stolen will only add insult to injury.

Keeping Track

You’ve probably heard of computer tracking software and services. If a thief steals your computer, especially a laptop, using a computer tracking service enables you to track down your lost computer and increases the chances of it being retrieved safely. While these apps can be installed on any computer, it’s important to note that they can be rendered ineffective if your hard drive is wiped clean. However, they are still a valuable safeguard and have been successful in numerous computer theft cases.

While all of these tips are useful in keeping your computer safe, there is no replacement for common sense and reasonable vigilance. Make sure to take good care of your computer; chances are it takes good care of you.

Your company can benefit greatly from workplace education programs (WEP). Morale will improve, employees will feel cared for as individuals, and they will strengthen your team. WEPs can be carried out in a small-scale way with educational handouts or in a large-scale way by providing half or full day classes. No matter how you decide to implement educational programs, learning interesting things keeps employees fresh and inspired.

If workplace education programs don’t have an element of play, they can be boring and demotivating. Classes need to be challenging, but not so difficult they make your staff feel like they are hitting a brick wall. You’d like your staff to feel satisfied with the job they are doing and have fun doing it.

Here are some ways to keep education programs interesting and fun.

Group Employees into Teams – Teams stimulate healthy competition, which can lead to better employee collaboration. They can also strengthen your team, as employees will build up stronger relationships as they get to know each other better on a more personal level.

Provide Incentives –Incentives are a good way to stimulate your workforce. They work well regardless of whether you have a team structure or your employees work independently.

Create Games – Incorporating a game when people learn improves how much they will retain. Games also develop team-building skills and keeps learning light and fun.

Employees appreciate workplace education programs when implemented properly. They break up the week, keep things interesting, and support self improvement. Education in the workplace doesn’t have to mean a huge endeavor; it can be scaled to fit your company and your recourses. If you choose to institute a WEP, remember that the more fun and interesting it is the more successful it will be.
